Glimpses Of Nikoma Bell’s Live Mixing Masterclass

Last spring, I took my sax to Dudley and jammed to my heart’s content while Nikoma Bell taught a wonderful group of women how to mix sound live.

It was fun to play with absolute freedom in a positive and pleasant environment, and it was inspiring to see fellow women get in touch with the tech side of music. Through my long career, I’ve had the possibility to work with female sound engineers and female technicians just a handful of times—in fact, I might literally be able to count them with the fingers of one hand! It’s uplifting to see more women getting into the field and imagine a future where the scales are more balanced. Besides, even if you don’t become a full-time technician, knowing your way around the equipment gives you a lot of agency and confidence.

Branching a little from my usual format for YouTube videos, I uploaded some shorts with snippets of the class to my channel. I quite like the variety!

There are now shorts of other events too, and I’ll keep posting more with glimpses of performances in between my longer videos. I hope you like them, and that, if you do, you consider sharing them with your friends!
