What Is ‘Not Just Jazz’?

Millicent has had many false dawns in her pursuit of excellence in musicianship and in 2014 decided to not wait for a Major Label to take her forward but to apply her business acumen and put on her own show which she named ‘Not Just Jazz’ in the Bar of the Crescent Theatre. To her amazement the Show sold out four weeks before the performance date.  Each year since then the show has grown and played to a larger audience.

Not Just Jazz’ showcases Millicent’s original compositions as well as her interpretation of iconic Jazz, Blues, Reggae, Soul and Gospel numbers with her live Band, backing singers and dancers.  Her fans described the night as ‘captivating’, ‘uplifting’ and ‘entertaining’.Millicent featured the National Caribbean Monument Charity in Not Just Jazz III and Not Just Jazz IV.  The charity is campaigning for the erection of a memorial in the Staffordshire National Memorial Arboretum in remembrance of Caribbean Military heroes.

In 2018 a  Photographic Exhibition of seen and unseen photographs of aspects of my music journey taken by her first professional photographer Anthony MacFarlane (Mac13soul Photographic) was curated by the North Smethwick Development Trust at Brasshouse  and ran from Monday 22nd July until Fri 31st August 2018.   The exhibition was officially opened on Friday 20th July by the Dr Beverly Lindsay OBE, OD Vice Lord-Lieutenant of West Midlands.  This was featured in the  Sandwell Chronicle.  Read here  Sandwell_Chronicle_Millicent_Stephenson_Photographic_Exhibition_ article

Due to team members experiencing bereavement or dealing with the health challenges of their parents the Not Just Jazz V concert of 2018 did not run however in 2019 a renewed and recharged Not Just Jazz 5 show is scheduled for Fri 26th July. Millicent will be sharing her stage with her proteges and Cafemnee women and giving back by proceeds of the Show supporting SHAPE, a women’s refuge and  Cafe On The Green, which provides meals for people on low or no income.
