Bustling days turn into weeks, which turn into months and years. It’s easy to get caught in the endless rush of modern life, which in turn can give you a constant sense of exhaustion, or even the feeling of being lost. There are many ways to counter this, and remembrance is one of them.
If you don’t mind feeling old sometimes (haha!), taking a stroll down memory lane can be healing and helpful. It grounds you and provides you with a fresh perspective in regard to your life and journeys. This goes beyond the acknowledgement of achievements or grand events. The little things matter too! Of course, important milestones are easier to recall, and you’ll probably have photos or videos to assist you when remembering them. Take as an example this video from 1992. Starting at 1:17:47, you can see me performing at the National Gospel Celebration alongside the band Vision:
To think that this wasn’t even my first big stage performance! It’s been almost 35 years since I stepped under the spotlight, and being mindful of it brings me a lot of positive feelings. That said, I also find value in thinking about a random, quiet day of practising my music that might have happened that same month, or about the food I ate after cleaning my sax at the end of it.
If you sit and think about your experiences beyond the big moments for a while, some little memories might come back to you. They might amuse you or make you nostalgic, they’ll help you reflect and be aware of yourself. Even if nothing comes to mind, you’d still get some rest and mindfulness by taking time to think about something other than “what comes next.” Give it a try and let me know how it goes 😉
