Setting goals for ourselves is an act of balance. Our ambition clashes with our self-doubt. We struggle between dreaming big and keeping things realistic. As we tend to be our own worst critics, the negative views we hold about our pasts cast a shadow of anxiety over our plans for the future.
Of course, there are things that go wrong, but never forget or dismiss the things that go right. Every one of your achievements belongs to you and affirms your qualities. If you struggle to see them by yourself, you can count on the people around you.
For example, one good day last year I received an e-mail from the F-List, a non-profit initiative that seeks to increase the visibility of women and people with diverse gender identities in the British music industry. They were working in their social media campaign to celebrate their 5th anniversary, and wanted to feature me and my work as part of it. The person in charge said I was a good fit for what they wanted to highlight. What a positive affirmation!
Feeling consciously grateful for things like this will help me in the event that I get stuck in a rut of insecurity. The same is true for you. Your talent and qualities shine, and people can see that light, even if you don’t think it is bright enough. So, for this year, use all your reached milestones as stepping stones to reach greater highs. I am looking forward to seeing you at the top!
