Comedian, writer and actor Sir Lenny Henry is the fifth of seven children, and the first of his family to be born in the UK after his parents migrated from Jamaica. Many, many families —including my own!— share this history, all encouraged to move to the UK in an effort to solve the labour shortage crisis of the 50s. We have come to be known as ‘The Windrush Generation.’
Read my article about music and The Windrush Generation, written for the Musicians’ Union.
Inspired in the stories his mother told him, Sir Lenny Henry wrote a TV series called `Three Little Birds’ (like the Bob Marley & The Wailers song). It’s set in 1957 and follows sisters Leah and Chantrelle, plus their friend Hosanna, as they leave their family and friends in Jamaica behind, hoping to get a fresh start in England. Once they arrive, they have to confront the harsh reality, broken promises and hardships of migration, all while fighting for their dreams.
Speaking of dreams! I’m happy to say that Sue Harris, a great woman who participated in my projects for emerging female musicians, is featured in the show. She has a background role as a barmaid. There aren’t shots of her in the trailers, so if you want to see her shine, the best thing you can do is to watch ‘Three Little Birds’ on ITV’s website.
Many congratulations to Sue for this achievement. I’m looking forward to seeing more of her in the silver screen soon!
