Many rivers to cross
But I can’t seem to find my way over
Wandering, I am lost
As I travel along White Cliffs of Dover
In this interview with John Doran for The Quietus, Jimmy Cliff, who wrote and released ‘Many Rivers To Cross’ in 1969, says that the White Cliffs of Dover reference his constant travels to the European continent, back when he was trying to make a name for himself in the UK. This context explains why the lyrics of this song are somber and filled with frustration. However, I don’t find it to be just resentful or sad. Rather, I think it acknowledges the bitterness that can come with perseverance. The song is a honest expression of Cliff’s strength and resilience. In that way, it inspires a quiet, sort of subdued hope.
I played it for the Jamaican Nurses Association a few months ago. You can watch on YouTube:
Positive feelings are not always bubbly and bright, but that doesn’t make them any more valuable or beautiful. I hope you enjoy this sax cover, and that you have a good day today.
